Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea close to the banks of Vembanad Lake. It is the administrative headquarters of the Alappuzha district and the 6th largest city in Kerala. Along with Kumarakom, Alappuzha is among the most famous destination of Kerala Backwaters. Munnar

2.Munnar Kerala


Munnar town is situated at an altitude ranging from 5000 to 8000 feet on the Kannan Devan Hills in Devikulam taluk and is the largest town in the Idukki district covering an area of nearly 557 sq. km. It is also called the Swiss of South India. This is also one of the famous places to visit near Kochi, Coimbatore & Madurai cities.

Munnar was once the summer resort of the British Governors of South India. Munnar is at the confluence of three rivers - Madurapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala. In Tamil, Munnar means 'Three Rivers'. Munnar is home to some of the world's best tea estates. The majority of the plantations are owned by Tata Group's Kannan Devan Tea Estate. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India - Anamudi, which towers over 2695 meters. Trekking facilities are available to reach Anamudi on foot.

3.Thekkady Kerala


Thekkady is one of the most famous sanctuaries near Kochi, and also among the most scenic Kerala Backwater destinations. In 1899, the Maharaja of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma has declared the forests around Periyar Lake as a private game reserve to stop the invasion of tea plantations. Further, in 1934, the lake reserve was converted into a game sanctuary, the Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary, which covered an area of about 500 sq. km. It was established as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 and named after the Periyar River. The sanctuary is spread across 777 sq. km, of which 360 sq. km is a thick evergreen forest. It was declared as Tiger Reserve in 1978.

The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. There are a few watch towers inside Periyar Tiger Reserve which are excellent for viewing wildlife. Thekkady is famous for Asian Elephants, Tigers, Gaurs, Sambars, Lion-tailed Macaques, Nilgiri Langurs, Wild Boars, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Wild Dogs, Sloth Bears, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Civet, Nilgiri Tahr, etc. The main attraction of the sanctuary is a group of wild elephants that come to play in the lake.

The sanctuary contains 265 species of birds including migratory. Malabar grey hornbill, Indian pied hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, many species of drongos, woodpeckers, flycatchers, babblers, spectacular Malabar trogon, etc can be seen near the boat landing. The sanctuary is also home to a wide variety of reptiles. The Periyar Lake and streams have several species of fish including the masheer, the famous and endangered game fish of India.

Thekkady:At a distance of 4 km from Kumily, 54 km from Idukki, 82 km from Munnar, 111 km from Kottayam, 136 km from Madurai, 143 km from Kochi, and 211 km from Trivandrum, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Thekkady in the Idukki district of Kerala. Kovalam is one of the wonderful Kerala beach destinations. Kovalam means 'A grove of coconut trees and the whole area beyond the shores around Kovalam is filled with the endless sight of coconut trees offering magnificent views while approaching the beach. Kovalam gained importance when Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai, the Queen of Travancore, built a palace, the Halcyon Castle on the top of a rock near the beach in the 1930s. Thereafter the place was brought to the public eye by her nephew the Maharaja of Travancore. After Independence, Kovalam was relatively unknown but it gained popularity in the 1970s when hippies arrived here and changed this fishing village into a tourist destination with their wild parties.

Light House Beach, Samudra Beach, Eve's Beach, and Poovar are the most prominent places to visit in Kovalam. The most popular beach is the Light House Beach and offers an amazing sight of the Vizhinjam Mosque. Lighthouse Beach got its name due to the old Vizhinjam Lighthouse located on top of the Kurumkal hillock. Kochi is one of the finest natural harbors in the world. The city has 3 parts - Fort Kochi, Willington Island, and Ernakulam. Vasco da Gama, whose arrival in Kerala about 500 years ago opened up a new era of trade between India and Europe. Kochi & Ernakulam are twin cities that are separated by Kayal backwaters. Till the early 16th century, Kochi was a small fishing village that became the first European township in India. The town was shaped by the Portuguese, the Dutch, and later the British. 6.Wayanad Kerala


Wayanad is a hill district in Kerala and one of the popular hill stations near Bangalore. Wayanad district was formed in 1980 by carving out areas from Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Kalpetta is the headquarters of the Wayanad district. The name Wayanad is derived from Vayal Nadu which means the land of paddy fields.

It is a picturesque plateau situated at an altitude ranging between 700 to 2100 meters nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats on the borders of Tamil Nadu and the Karnataka States. The culture of Wayanad is mainly tribal-oriented. This district is one of the biggest foreign exchange earners of the State with its production of cash crops like pepper, cardamom, coffee, tea, spices, and other condiments.

Wayanad has a rich history and the hills of Wayanad have several evidences of the New Stone Age civilization. There are pictures and pictorial writings on the walls of both the caves of Ampukuthimala, which lie between Sultan Bathery and Ambalavayal, that provide crucial information about the past era and civilization. In ancient times the land was ruled by the Vedar Rajas. Later Wayanad came under the rule of Pazhassi Raja of the Kottayam Royal Dynasty. After becoming the King of Mysore, Hyder Ali invaded this land and brought it under his control. However, it went back to the Kottayam Royal Dynasty during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Finally, this region came under British rule.

Wayanad is home to several tourist attractions in the form of lakes, caves, sanctuaries, and waterfalls. 7.Kumarakom Kerala


Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake in Kerala. Also known as the Queen of Vembanad, Kumarakom is the most famous Kerala backwaters destination for traditional houseboat rides. The name Kumarakom was derived from the deity of an old temple Kumaran. Kumarakom is also one of the ideal weekend getaways from Kochi. Kumarakom is an unbelievably beautiful paradise of mangrove forests, emerald green paddy fields, and coconut groves. In order to protect the ecology of the place, the Kerala government has declared Kumarakom as a special tourism zone. Arundhati Roy, the author of the 1997 Booker Prize-winning 'The God of Small Things', was raised in the nearby Aymanam village.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Kumaramangalam Temple, Vaikom, Pathiramanal Island, Aranmula, Vagamon, and Erumeli are the popular places to visit in Kumarakom. 8.Varkala Kerala


Varkala is a calm and quiet coastal hamlet situated on the Arabian Sea coast in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. It is one of the oldest municipalities in Kerala. Varkala is the suburban city of Trivandrum. Varkala is a lesser-known yet absolutely paradisiacal destination that houses relatively untouched and clean beaches, historical forts, religious sites, natural springs, backwaters, and more. This quaint town in the southern part of Kerala is known for the unique sedimentary rocks belonging to the Cenozoic age, popularly known as the Warkalli Formation. The Warkalli Formation, along with the Quilon formation, represent sediments laid down in the Kerala basin that existed during the Mio-Pliocene times.

Varkala was earlier called Udaya Marthandapuram after Udaya Marthanda Varma, the 16th century Travancore king who contributed immensely to the development of this little coastal town. This coastal town is sometimes referred to as the Southern Varanasi due to the presence of the 2,000year-old Janardana Swami Temple.

There are some fascinating legends associated with Varkala. According to the popular myth, King Pandyan built the famous Janardhan Swami Temple here as a redemption for his sins, as instructed by Lord Brahma. Another story tells that a group of pilgrims sought help from Lord Narada to atone for their sins. The Lord flung his waistcloth or valkalam, which landed on the seaside, thus giving the town its name. The pilgrims had to offer prayers here, giving rise to the tradition of Papanasam or redemption of sins by dipping in the holy waters of the sea.

10.Thiruvananthapuram Kerala


Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Trivandrum, is the capital of the state of Kerala and the headquarters of Thiruvananthapuram district. Situated between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, Thiruvananthapuram means the City of Lord Anantha in Sanskrit and Malayalam. The name derives from the deity of Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Trivandrum is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland.

The city once formed a part of the kingdom of Travancore, which had its capital at Padmanabhapuram. Even now most of the buildings in the city possess the royal heritage of the Travancore Kings. 15.Sabarimala Kerala


Sabarimala is a revered Hindu shrine located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. Dedicated Lord Ayyappan, Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple is one of the oldest temples in India, with a history of more than 5000 years old. It is one of the most visited pilgrim centers in the world with an estimated 45 - 50 million devotees every year. The temple is situated amid 18 hills, at an altitude of about 3000 feet. It is believed that Lord Parasurama installed the idol of Ayyappa at Sabarimala.

The pilgrimage season begins in November and ends in January (the temple remains closed during the rest of the year except for the first five days of each Malayalam month). The devotees following Ayyappa Vratam (Ayyappa Maala - a 41 days Vratam with strict restrictions) carry Irumudi Kettu containing traditional offerings to the Lord. Mandalapooja (Nov17th) and Makaravilakku (Jan 14th) are the important events of the temple.

Sabarimala temple has no restrictions on caste and religion. The temple is open to males of all age groups, but women between 10-50 years of age group are NOT allowed into the temple. Pamba, Erumeli, Pandalam, and Malikappurathu Amma Temple are the other prominent places to visit in Sabarimala. Sabarimala can be reached by an 8 km trek from Pamba, which is the nearest road point to the temple.
